Monday's Review of The Bone Season By Samantha Shannon

 17199504

It is the year 2059. Several major world cities are under the control of a security force called Scion. Paige Mahoney works in the criminal underworld of Scion London, part of a secret cell known as the Seven Seals. The work she does is unusual: scouting for information by breaking into others’ minds. Paige is a dreamwalker, a rare kind of clairvoyant, and in this world, the voyants commit treason simply by breathing.

But when Paige is captured and arrested, she encounters a power more sinister even than Scion. The voyant prison is a separate city—Oxford, erased from the map two centuries ago and now controlled by a powerful, otherworldly race. These creatures, the Rephaim, value the voyants highly—as soldiers in their army.

Paige is assigned to a Rephaite keeper, Warden, who will be in charge of her care and training. He is her master. Her natural enemy. But if she wants to regain her freedom, Paige will have to learn something of his mind and his own mysterious motives.

The Bone Season introduces a compelling heroine—a young woman learning to harness her powers in a world where everything has been taken from her. It also introduces an extraordinary young writer, with huge ambition and a teeming imagination. Samantha Shannon has created a bold new reality in this riveting debut.

Review of The Bone Season
Rating: 4 stars

This story is told through the eyes of Paige, she’s a dreamwalker and a rare kind of clairvoyant. In London any type of supernatural is executed, or they just simply disappear.
Paige works in the Seven Seals for a master criminal and seems content in her role, yet her father has no idea just what Paige does as she pretends to work at an oxygen bar.

I read this book a while ago and should have written my review then as this one seems difficult and now I remember why. The first 40% of this book, I needed the dictionary that was placed at the back of the paperback book
Some sentences had so many new words that I really couldn’t make it add up, so I was back and forth like a yo yo. To make matters worse I remember my head was spinning, with so much information and then it settled a bit when Paige is arrested and taken to the clairvoyant prison, which is not what all clairvoyant believed it to be. Controlled by a race of Rephaim, immortals they use clairvoyant for their gifts. On arrival Paige is assigned a keeper and he is called Warden, he is feared by most. I think straight away I could see something different in Warden, and soon we do see a mutual respect blossom between these two. But no matter how much Warden tries to protect Paige, she is always on the war path, trying to protect the ones she cares for, and trying to get home to the Seven Seals.

The story was very unique, but also very confusing as in the terms that once Paige arrives at this prison a new set of rules, new words, and a new way is told to us, making you scrap everything you just learnt at the start of the book.

Overall I really did enjoy this book, it was something new and refreshing. With the style of writing and the complexity of words I’m not sure that I would read book two, or maybe I just need to give my head a rest for a while.

Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…

Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.

Something worse than the Arum has come to town…

The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we're linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there's this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that's possible. Against all common sense, I'm falling for Daemon. Hard.

But then everything changes…

I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies…

Review of Onyx

Rating: 4 stars

After reading Obsidian I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the second book, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Katy is now connected to Daemon after he heals from an attack by the Arum. They keep up their usual sarcasm but Daemon wants Katy to see that he wants her, because he those and it’s not the connection. Katy being Katy doesn’t believe a word of it. So we watch Daemon try to swoop Katy off her feet.

Soon after Blake shows up and I must say straight away I didn’t like him I just got bad vibes, but when he freezes time in the café when their attached by an Arum, we learn more about the connection that Katy has formed with Daemon.
In book two we get to meet members of DOD who we believe are there to keep an eye on the Luxian’s but soon we learn that isn’t the case. The plot in book two delves deeper and soon it’s not just the Luxian’s lives on the line but Katy’s also.

I must say she makes some stupid calls, like with BLAKE I really wanted to smack her across the head, but it just makes the story more intriguing and I must say it kept me on the edge of my seat. Once again the love story was amazing. My favourite thing in this book, was when every time Daemon either spoke to Blake or spoke about him, he would call him every other name then Blake, I really thought it was hilarious. I was giggling away to myself no matter where I was, earning plenty of weird stares. But I just loved it.

The end leaves off at a very high point and now I need book three. Here we go again.

Monday's Review of Throne of Glass By Sarah J. Maas

7896527

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.

Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another.

Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined

Throne of Glass

Rating: 5 Stars

It took me a while to get into this story. Celaena the main character wasn’t easy to warm too, I was very conflicted about her and it took me to have read 40% of the book before I fell in love with the person she was.

Her story is so sad the more you get to know her and for nineteen years old, she has seen far more than anyone her age should have seen. Her freedom has never existed she has always been controlled by someone, but now an opportunity arises being the Kings champion for four years and then she gets her freedom. But she must win the contest first before she can be crowned the winner.

Her journey while training in the castle to compete is chaos emotionally and physically for Celaena, as the most deadly assassin in the world she’s never trusted. At times she is a frightened young girl who never had family or friends and who craves for freedom, but she hides the little girl inside herself and sarcasm and anger cover it up along with an amazing amount of self-confidence that isn’t completely real. As Chaol the Kings guard and Dorian the Crown prince get close to Celeana they see glimpses of what lies under her façade and soon a friendship with Chaol, and something more with Dorian blossoms only to come with dire consequences, and as the bodies of the competitors pile up and Celeana meets Elena, a goddess from another world her purpose to win and become the kings Champion doubles. It’s not just her freedom that’s at stake but the people of her world who will suffer if she doesn’t banish the darkness that lurks in the castle.

Chaol was my favourite he reminds me of Valek in poison study, and I want Celeana to pick him. Dorrian is sweet but he’s in fear of his father the King, and he just isn’t man enough. But Choal O god, I loved him he’s cold, moody, and hard yet in the smallest gestures he does for Celeana he makes my heart flutter. He’s as tortured as she is, and I just loved him. I can’t wait to read the second book and see if my wish will come true and Celeana picks him or even kisses him.

Overall this book was outstanding if you like Poison study by Maria V Snyder then this is the one for you.
